One of the most common questions I get is: “What’s the best age to start karting?”
Maybe you’re thinking about it for your kid too, or even for yourself.
Here’s my short and honest answer: the earlier, the better — but it’s never impossible.

The Best Age to Start
If you can start at 4 or 5 years old, that’s perfect.
At that age, kids are like sponges, they’re fearless, they adapt quickly, and they start building driving instincts early.
They start getting addicted to adrenaline, to the feeling of grip and control, which is something really important and that should not be neglected.
And by the time they’re 7 or 8, they’re already ready to race in official categories like 60cc Mini class.
What If You Start Later?
Well…
Now, let’s say you start at 9, 10, or even 11.
Is it too late? Not necessarily.
But you have to understand something really important: there will be an “experience gap” as I like to call it.
A kid who started at 4 has already done years of laps, races, mistakes, and learning.
So if you come in at 10 and want to compete with those same kids, you’ll have to double or triple the work.
You’ll need:
- More driving days per week
- More testing
- Instensive coaching
- A clear strategy to catch up closing the gap
It’s possible, 100%. But it takes serious commitment, from the driver and (most importantly) the family.
What If It’s Just for Fun?
If you’re not aiming for Formula One — and you just want to enjoy racing, have fun, maybe win a few trophies — then you can start at any age.
Seriously. Karting is amazing at every level. Even for adults with the passion for adrenaline.
But if your goal is to reach the top — like F1 or international titles — then you need to be realistic about the time and effort required.
Starting late just means you need to be more aggressive with your development, accellerating progress at a rapid rate.
Is Talent Enough?
Let’s talk about talent for a second. People love to say, “If the kid is talented, he’ll make it.” But that’s not how it works. I’m sorry to tell you that.
At least not today, in 2025.
It could have been the case back in the 80’s. Senna did his first race only at 13 despite setting laps much earlier than that.
Now adays at 13 you’ll have done already hundreds of races.
Yep, about 20 races a year (conservative number) starting from 7-8 (20*6=120 races by the age of 13).
I’ve seen a lot of talented kids who didn’t work hard — and they didn’t go far.
And I’ve seen less talented kids outwork everyone and become champions.
So don’t rely just on talent, that’s a bad strategy.
Rely instead on track time, coaching, and discipline.
Calculate the amount of days on track you do every month, and try to increase that amount every time.
I know it’s expensive and time consuuming, but that’s the only strategy for having a shot at suceeding.
Final Thoughts
Start as early as you can — that’s always the best move.
But if you’re starting a bit later, don’t panic. Just know what you’re up against, and go all in.
The earlier you start, the more “experience points” you build. It’s like a video game. Really!
The more XP you earn, the better you get — and the better your chances of making it to the top.
