Sim Racing vs Go Karting: Comparisons and Future Projections
⚡ Key Takeaways
  • International karting costs $50,000-150,000 per season while sim racing starts at $3,000 for professional hardware
  • In karting you get trophies but zero prize money, while sim racing offers up to $100,000+ in prize pools

  • Karting may become extinct by 2030-2035 due to costs and lack of career prospects
  • Sim racing has unlimited practice time versus karting’s financial constraints on track time
  • Virtual reality and esports growth will create professional career paths for sim racers

With the recent increase of the sim racing community, a common discussion has been whether sim racing is better than karting or the other way around.

Although both possess their own advantages and disadvantages, before making a choice, it is necessary to look at the similarities and distinctions between the two.

In this discussion, we will delve into the following: what sim racing is all about in comparison with karting in terms of notable factors such as cost, safety, skill level among others, if at all any. We will also look at some future aspects nay predictions for each type of racing so that you may make a rational decision pertaining to your racing ambitions.

Spoiler alert: After weighing out the advantages and disadvantages of both cultures, I’m going to be controversial and say that sim racing is the way to go in the future while karting is heading for oblivion in the next fifteen years because of its exorbitant fees coupled with lack of incentives, minimal earnings for almost extinct PRO drivers and coming credibleness of the sport itself.

Still, let’s discuss this in detail, shall we, please?

These are all the aspects that we’re going to evaluate concerning observing and their effectiveness.

Such as the following:

  • Costs
  • Practice time
  • Prizes
  • Making a livelihood
  • Projected future

Tell me the difference between karting and sim racing

The go-karts clearly have an impact on the race as they result in a different way of driving particularly resolved to braking much more gently and not going very fast into a corner.

Still, it is generally very physical when you drive because the G forces that you will experience in the turns are definitely more excessive than for most motion simulation systems.

There are of course others like how many resources are available for training, how much will one spend to travel, what is the career trajectory of the individual which we are going to delve into now.

What is the price of entering into karting?

On average this championship takes place over about 15 to 20 rounds and incurs expenses of about 50,000 to 150,000 US dollars for each season in the international karting competitions.

This expense is simply because of the full pack of kart components, engine and tires, team services and travelling costs. A high-quality racing go-kart can costs up to 10,000 while a well set-up race engine can be rented and would cost between 1000 and 2000 dollars per race.

As you can see these costs are very heavy and frankly increase as the sport grows in scope.

💡 Sim Racing vs Karting Costs

There is a variation of costs that are associated with sim racing based on how immersive and what type of hardware you want but you may begin with a $3000 professional hardware cost. This will include a pro steering wheel, a GT or F1 cockpit (seat), best pedals setup and also triple screen monitors. This, as you see, is still way cheaper than the cost of a single season in karting.

How many times can you practice go karts? The only limiting factor on how much training is available is time and the available financial resources.

An average driver will perhaps manage to do between 4- 6 training days every month while for the more wealthy drivers they will be able to do ten to twelve tripling the cost expenses. Not everyone will be from a well-off family who will provide $7000 for even a child’s sports monthly.

How generally can you train practicing any kind of sim racing?

As much as you want depending upon the amount of time available. There won’t be any extra bucks to be spent for each hour or each day behind the sim racing wheel as they do for karting or even for real car racing.

What kind of prizes where you able to gain in karting?

Pretty much much nothing. Only shiny trophies as I won multiple times.

Within ten years spent in professional karting I managed to take many international races where I ranked on top of the podium several times but was not able to earn money from any of them. That goes a long way to explaining as to why there seems to be loss of interest in the sport from the series sponsors or any othyer karting manufacturers involved.

Can you earn an income from go karting?

No, unless you are one of them people who would like to work at times as a mechanic for other drivers like most pro drivers are forced to do so.

Although on the optimistic side, a professional go-kart swimmer, you should be happy to find work where your monthly salary is somewhere from $2000-3000. Probably when most of the 10 go-kart pro drivers make a living from playing go-kart racing throughout the world and the rest are in Italy working for Italian manufacturers.

All other 20 semi-pro drivers that took part in the event get the honorable opportunity to go race for free, but they must cover the costs for their travelling.

To respond to this last posed question, well, not in a hundred years do you make a living out of racing go karting professionally. As an esports sim racer however, the chances of you earning from this are quite high.

What do you win in sim racing?

There are a several prizes which range up to one hundred thousand dollars in both iRacing and the official GT World Championship actioned by Federation Assetto Corsa Competizione.

Also, as teams are innovating around new business models where they sponsor online competitions and share the entry fees and the sponsorships, which increases their revenues.

That’s pretty amazing considering it will form a complete economic system around professional sim racing and the drivers will be able to earn decent money from it. I can’t describe how awesome this is because finally, motorsport talented kids will get the opportunity to race without having to pay the earth and even more importantly will be able to turn their passions into a profit.

Can you expect to earn an income while engaging in sim racing?

Yes, surely you can. It still requires you to be exceptionally good within that 1% of sim drivers, though with lots of practice and perseverance you will probably be able even to get to the top and earn a living out of it.

You may consider such a noteworthy series as the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series where in addition to the individual prizes, who everyone would get $300,000, there is $100 000 to the winner!

There is a huge amount of prize money in the sim racing tournament and this is just the beginning and this number will continue to grow. I’m very excited to see what the world of eSports will look like in 5 years and what place professional sim racing will take in all of this.

The best drivers in the world can already make some money out of it and regarding the rise of sim racing, this figure will only increase in the coming years.

How do you see the future of karting?

I think that karting is going to be either purely electric and significantly cheaper by 2030 or will cease to exist altogether since the young people of today will choose sim racing to compete and make money.

That’s a rather strong statement, however, I can hardly imagine how karting is going to endure in any case because as it is at present age, sim racing is way better as it is more affordable and in the top 1% of sim racers, you can even earn a decent amount of money out of it.

Perhaps its not going to be 2030 or 2035 yet its end is nearing, and it will not be such a distant past, due to the unaffordable cost and the dearth of prospects for a career.

What is the expected progress of the sport of sim racing?

I think it is a very bright future. Sim racers will progressively have the stature where they can face an array of contests on a daily basis and actually make money doing it.

We will see almost all children getting into a carting phase where they are exposed to simulation racing rather than physical go karts and for the very best of them, they would even be available for professional racing teams on a skill based career path.

As virtual reality advances as well as the number of sim racing drivers improves, the also the kinds of races simulate will keep getting better. Isn’t this something I really look forward in the next couple of years to come?

There are only more wonderful things to come as time passes, and I am very excited to witness the wonderful things that are going to come in the coming years.

Does sim racing help with karting?

Yes and no. It generally helps in learning about racing lines and racecraft, though the driving style is totally different and it will require you to spend lots of time driving a real kart in order to acquire it.

Does sim racing improve real racing?

Yes, it 100% does. The racing lines and core driving technique will be transferable, but you will still need to drive a real car to understand how the real driving feedback is.
