Now… we need to differentiate between two things.

First of all, do you want to do it for just a recreational purpose, so just doing hobby driving on a rental kart, either indoor or outdoor? Or do you want to do karting in a professional way to do races, maybe not even a professional way, but just at the club level, but still, whether you want to do casual rental kart races, or do you want to do owner karts races, then it is pretty big different in your decision. So have a look with this guide exactly everything you need to know about a karting license. I will answer some of the most frequently asked questions,

when is a license required?

Now, license is required if you want to do races, if you just want to do casual driving, you are not going to be needing it. Of course, it’s not allowed to drive a go kart on a street. I think that is quite obvious. It is not legal in any country that I know. Maybe it’s in your city, but it’s normally not legal anywhere, so you cannot drive a go kart on a road period, with or without a license, unless you want to go to jail. Haha, license is required if you want to do races, either at the club level or a professional level. So So when it comes about owner karting, not rental karting. For rental karting, you do not need a license. You can just show up, sign up to the track, and then just hit the track and drive. So you will not need a specific license for that, whereas for a professional karting race, whether it’s at an amateurish level still or at an international level, you will still need to have a license. And that’s very simple. You don’t have to do anything specific. You just need to show up to the local licensing authority and sign up for a karting license in it’s a leader is ACI, and you go to ACI And you basically request a karting license, and you will need to do a medical check. In most countries, I guess, you go through the medical check, and once you’ve done the medical check, they give you the license. And then once you want to sign up to the races, you need to take both your medical check and your license. So the license is valid for just one year as well as the medical check. So every year you will need to create a new license and a new medical check. So yes, that is how you create a license if, of course, you want to do either local track, local club races, national races or international races, not if you want to drive rental karts casually. what does the test involve to get a karting license,

you don’t necessarily have to do anything specific. It’s not like you have to do a practice or theory exam like it is for road cars. That way you need to get the license. So it’s not like that exactly. You just need to

show up, fill up a form,

and then they request you to do a medical check to to assess your physical abilities, your eyesight, your heart performance. And of course, if everything is in check, you’re giving the green light to to go and get a license. It’s basically a normal procedure if you want to be any kind of athlete. At least. I don’t know the procedure for every single country, but I know it’s like this for most country in Europe, including Italy. So I believe it’s going to be very similar in all countries. What I suggest is to check your local license, authorities, your local karting Federation. Just type on Google your country, and then karting Federation, and you should find all of the information about applying for a license if you wish to do the races.

Is the karting license difficult to obtain?

Well, I believe No, it’s not difficult at all. You just need to pass a medical check and fill up a simple form. Now it’s not, as I said, a driving car exam where you need to go through the theory written exam or the driving exam on the road. It is not like that. So don’t worry, you will not have to do any kind of exam like that. You just show up to your local branch authority, and you will receive your license after showing them a valid medical certificate in the last 12 months.

Do kids need a different one?

The procedure is exactly the same, of course, for kids, they normally you can get the license only from like seven years old onwards. You cannot get a license at three years old. Of course, there’s a limit, of course, from country to country. I know some countries are a little bit more permissive and give out licenses earlier on, even at six years old. But again, I cannot say this for every country, so you should check out your national license authority and ask all of them the questions. But it makes sense. You do not want to get the kids to be having a license too early. Otherwise it’s going to be actually quite unsafe. They need to go through a month period of training and give them some at least years before getting into the track and race, because that’s the most dangerous part.

What safety knowledge do you learn

now for very young kids of like six, seven years old, some countries provide a licensed training course that introducts them to the sport. And it’s quite cool. You can start getting a grid, an idea of the controls, and they may give you some theory lessons. It’s quite interesting. I don’t know if all the countries provide that, but Italy does so for drivers of six years and seven and eight, etc. Of course, if you do that at 1112 they’re not gonna give you this kind of course, but it’s just for the very young ones. They teach you basic safety procedures like flags and nothing too complicated. To be honest, I have not heard of any program that it’s that specific or accurate.

Are there any differences between countries?

Yes, every country, I guess, has this all difference. So you need to really check your national karting authority and ask for advices and their clear instructions.

What do you have to prepare before applying for a karting license?

Well, you need to prepare, obviously, your ID.

Then you need to make sure you get a medical certificate, which is valid from from the last 12 months, and once you have your ID, your medical certificate, and you have filled the form that was required and you had to pay, I guess, few years just for the application, then you are set and ready to go to get Your license and get your first race of your career. So we have learned all the intricacies of getting a karting license. We have came to realize that actually, it’s not difficult at all to get a karting license. There’s an age limit which, of course, is going to depend from country to country.

Normally, it’s six years old, roughly, like that. You don’t really have to pass any test like you do in road cars, driving licenses, but your child may have to go through some basics, safety explanation and a basic course of a few hours, if is six or seven years old, as in the case here in Italy. So that’s what you have to expect. But of course, always make sure that you check with your national carting authority to have a clear idea and yeah, make sure you always get your medical document checked so that you are never expired, and so that you are able to raise because if your medical document expires automatically, your license is not valid anymore in most countries.
