Late braking…it’s kind of the holy grail, isn’t it?
Every driver wants to master it.
Every driver wants to be the latest braker. (While still making the apex obviously).
And if you listen to the pros in Formula 1, they’re always talking about how late they can brake.
There’s a reason they’re the best in the worls, they’ve nailed this key part of driving.
And if you want to win races and become one of the top guys, this is something you absolutely have to get good at.
So let’s get into it!

Why Late Braking Matters
You can’t expect to be quick by braking early. Period.
Braking early, coasting into the corner, and just trying to get a good exit?
Well…Yeah, your exit might look decent, but trust me: you’ll never make up what you’re losing on corner entry.
Remember that.
The fastest drivers? They’re able to do both.
They brake super late and still get a strong exit.
That combo is what makes them so so quick.
If you compare the lap data — the delta time — you’ll see they’re gaining right on the brakes and on the exits (sometimes).
If you’re not getting any lap time under braking, two other things will happen other than just losing time:
- You’re going to get overtaken a lot.
- You’re not going to be able to overtake anyone either.
- The chassis won’t flex properly and thus not give you the mid corner front grip to rotate.
- The tyres won’t be put under pressure and therefore won’t heat up that much, which is bad for cold slippery conditions.
Neither of those sounds fun, right?
How to Get Better at Late Braking
So how do you get there?
Simple. You push the limits. Over and over again.
Next time you’re at the track, keep trying to brake later every single lap.
Go deeper into the braking zone, telling yourself: “Later”.
Then next lap: “Later”.
And again: “Later”.
Test the limits, push the limits.
Yes, you might overshoot, maybe even go off into the grass once or twice, that’s all part of learning where the real limit is.
Eventually, you’ll be able to feel it. To feel the exact place you should be braking. To feel the exact limit.
You’ll know how deep is too deep. And then you’ll start braking just at the edge.
That’s where the magic happens.
Brake Hard, Not Soft
And here’s something super important in order to accomplish all of this: if you want to brake late, you’ve got to brake hard. I mean, real hard!
There’s no such thing as braking late if you’re braking soft or inefficient.
With inefficient I mean that your kind of like releasing the brakes super early instead of holding them into the apex because you’ve carried lots of speed and still have to stop otherwise you’ll overshoot. T
hat’s what you’re looking for.
Soft inefficient braking = slow lap times. Period.
You need to be able to hit the brakes locking the rear with confidence and control.
Brake hard, get the kart slowed down quickly, and then rotate into the corner.
That’s what lets you carry speed in and still get out fast.
Make It Part of Your Driving Style
Once you master late braking, it becomes a part of your driving DNA.
That’s probably the single most important driving skill to develop in order to be crazy fast.
You’ll start gaining positions with clean, aggressive moves.
You’ll be able to defend better too, because other drivers won’t have those late braking skills to get around you.
Honestly, once you add this to your toolkit, the sky’s the limit.
You’ll be a beast on track. Dangerously fast.
The kind of driver no one wants to line up next to.
So, keep pushing your braking. Stay consistent. Keep improving.
And I’ll see you at the top.
