Alright, let’s talk about flags.

I know, it’s not the most exciting topic when you’re thinking about speed and overtakes — but trust me, knowing your flags can literally save your race.

You could be leading, doing everything right on the track… but if you ignore one of these signals? You’re done. Game over.

So let me break them down for you the way I explain it to drivers on a race weekend.

Yellow Flag 🚩

This one’s simple. No overtaking.
If you pass someone under yellow, even by mistake, your race might be ruined.

You’ll likely get penalized or even lose the win. If you see it, back off and play it safe — even if it’s frustrating.

Black and White Flag ⚫⚪

Think of this as your final warning.
You’re pushing people off? Driving aggressively? This is Race Control telling you, “Cut it out.” Keep it up, and you’ll get hit with the next one…

Black Flag ⛔

This one’s brutal. It means you’re disqualified.

You’ve either done something really nasty — like ramming into someone, ignoring repeated warnings, or maybe even kept driving with a damaged kart when you shouldn’t have.

When you get this flag, you’ve usually got 1–2 laps to stop. If you don’t, you’ll get fined or even banned from that race.

Yellow and Red Striped Flag 🚩🟧

This one signals something’s on the track — oil, rain, debris — something that could catch you off guard.
If you miss it and dive into the corner flat out, you might end up in the barriers.

It’s not always easy to spot in the heat of the moment, but if you know what it means, you’ll stay out of trouble.

Black and Orange Flag ⚫🟠

This one means something’s wrong with your kart.

Maybe you lost a side pod, your front fairing is off, or something else is flapping around dangerously.

You need to pit and fix it — if you keep going, they’ll show you the black flag next.

Blue Flag 🔵

Ah, the blue flag. Not a great one to see.
It usually means someone’s about to lap you. If you’re in the way, let them through — especially during finals. In heats, you might get away with continuing if you do it safely.

Slow Board / Full Course Yellow

This works like a virtual safety car. You’ve got to slow right down.
Usually, there’s been an incident, maybe someone got hurt, and it’s time to go into safety mode. Treat it seriously — don’t speed or you’ll get nailed.

Chequered Flag 🏁

The one we all love. Race finished.
Hopefully, you’re seeing this one in P1!

Final Thoughts

You can be the fastest driver on the grid, but if you ignore the flags, none of it matters. You’ll either get penalties, lose positions, or even get thrown out. That’s why knowing the meaning of each flag is a big part of being a complete driver.

If you’re serious about karting, learn these by heart — because racecraft isn’t just about driving fast… it’s also about driving smart.

See you at the track.
